One of
CRID’s top priorities is the development of the Edwards Mill site as a public
recreational facility. The 17-acre site is located on Northern Avenue at the
base of the Sand Hill neighborhood, along the Kennebec River. The site was
formerly used as a textile mill, which burned in 1989. CRID envisions the park
to be a destination for city residents as well as visitors to the state capital
district, providing new access to the Kennebec River and a new anchor for
downtown Augusta.

In 2002,
CRID engaged the services of Carol R. Johnson Associates to develop a master
plan for the park’s development. The design process included several public
input sessions, as well as meetings with the Augusta City Council and the CRID
Governing Board. This work culminated with an ambitious, multi-million dollar
plan which CRID is working to implement using a phased approach.

In 2004,
Governor Baldacci and Senator Beverly Daggett announced approximately $330,000
in state grant funds for the implementation of Phase I of the park. CRID is
currently seeking out additional funds to finalize Phase I and begin
construction.
