On Thursday, March 13, 2003 the Maine Downtown Center
hosted a Meet and Learn session featuring Alden Wilson, the Director of the
Maine Arts Commission at the Augusta City Center. The Downtown Center hosts
Meet and Learn Sessions at least three times per year on topics relevant to
downtown revitalization.
Alden Wilson spoke about
the importance of the creative class -
Maine’s artists, nonprofit organizations and individuals involved in creative
pursuits - to Maine’s economy generally and to downtown revitalization
specifically. Using figures from the New England Council’s Creative Economy
Study, Mr. Wilson made the case that the artistic and creative culture is an
important force for Maine’s economic future. He also discussed the Commission’s
work and programs that could promote the arts and culture downtown.
