FACT SHEET
Leadership Maine was developed by
the Maine Development Foundation in 1993 to build the state’s leadership
capacity. The vision, preparing 1,000
leaders to shape Maine’s future, is more than halfway to fruition. There are 574 alumni of Leadership
Maine. Each year, the program prepares a
select and diverse group of 40-45 statewide leaders to better meet the
challenges facing Maine’s
economy. Leadership Maine’s
success is measured by the extent to which graduates use the information and
relationships formed through the program to take action in moving Maine forward and improving
our quality of life.
Criteria
for Participants:
·
Personal concern
about the future economic health and quality of life in Maine, and a commitment to taking action.
·
Demonstrated
capacity to lead at the statewide level.
·
A record of
accomplishment within your organization and community.
Program
Delivery:
The program consists of eight
sessions, beginning with an orientation in June. The three-day opening retreat examines
different leadership styles, explores the dynamics of building a team, and
reviews the overall goals of the program. Sessions 2 – 6 explore best practice,
critical issues, opportunities and challenges in several regions of the state.
Leadership Maine
is experiential and uses guest speakers, group discussion, field experiences
and simulation. The closing retreat
provides participants with the opportunity to present their project findings,
and articulate a personal action plan for moving Maine forward. The graduation ceremony completes the
yearlong experience with a keynote speaker, reflections by class
representatives, and transition into the Leadership Maine alumni program.
Participant
Involvement:
Participants are required to attend the opening and closing
retreats. Attendance is expected at all
sessions to derive full benefit from the year-long experience. Each participant is involved in a team
project that will be delivered by the group at the closing retreat. Homework is assigned to increase learning
opportunities prior to each session.
Cost:
The tuition is $3,250 for
MDF members and $4,250 for non-members.
Scholarships are available.
