MDF believes that if you provide Maine people with
objective, non-partisan information about the performance of Maine’s economy,
the level of debate will rise and sounder policies will be developed. That’s
why we staff the Maine Economic Growth Council and publish the annual Measures
of Growth report card.
The Maine Economic Growth Council was established in 1993 by
statute and was charged with developing a long-range economic plan for the
state, including goal setting, measurable outcomes, and benchmarks. It is
comprised of 19 members who are jointly appointed by the Governor, the
President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House.
In response to its mandate to
develop a long-range plan for Maine’s economy, the Council developed an annual
indicators report, Measures of Growth, which uses targeted indicators to
assess the state of the economy and Maine’s overall quality of life. This
report has informed public and private debate and action for almost a decade
and remains an invaluable resource for policy development.
Maine Economic Growth Council Vision Statement:
A High Quality of Life for all Maine Citizens.
Achieving this
vision requires a vibrant and sustainable economy supported by vital
communities and a healthy environment.
The Council is permanent and non-partisan. Members
serve staggered three-year terms and represent diverse stakeholder interests in
the economy: business people, educators, labor leaders, state legislators, and
community and environmental interests. As mandated in the legislation, the
Council is staffed by the Maine Development Foundation. The work is paid for by
legislative appropriations in addition to significant contributions from MDF.
