Fort Kent Institution Offers Tuition Discount to Maine Employers & Employees through the Maine Employers’ Initiative

Fort Kent, ME – The University of Maine at Fort Kent and the Maine Development Foundation today announced a partnership to support workforce development for a growing network of committed employers and their employees across the state of Maine. The partnership is being realized through an MDF program, the Maine Employers’ Initiative, which provides Maine’s public and private employers with technical assistance, training and statewide recognition for taking steps to promote educational and career advancement opportunities for their employees.

“Partnerships like this one are critical to our efforts to increase the skill and knowledge in Maine’s workforce among busy, working adults who have limited time and resources to devote to taking that next step,” said Maggie Drummond, program director for the Employers’ Initiative at MDF.  “We are grateful to the University of Maine at Fort Kent for their strong commitment to Maine’s employers and non traditional students.”

The UMFK agreement extends a 50% discount on a student’s tuition for the second 3 or 4 credit class, either on campus or on-line, to employees of the 120 Maine Employers’ Initiative member companies.   This discount is the most recent offered by a Maine institution to this network of committed employers, and UMFK joins Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, the New England College of Business and Finance, and the University of New England in offering a discount to employers in the program.

“UMFK is enthusiastic about its involvement with the Maine Employers Initiative because we see this as yet another opportunity to align our programs with the needs of the Maine workforce,” said  Scott Voisine, Dean of Community Education at UMFK , “and to provide access to higher education to adult learners who already play an important part in the Maine economy.”

To take advantage of the discount, students will submit a letter from the employer prior to applying for a degree program or registering as a non-degree student.  UMFK now offers online programs in 9 different areas of study, as well as online certificate programs, in addition to their on-campus programming.
