Community Tourism Projects Launch in Five Maine Historic Downtown Communities

The Maine Downtown Center, a program of Maine Development Foundation (MDF), is excited to announce the launch of a first-of-its kind initiative in the U.S. for community tourism experiences in five Maine historic downtown communities  These experiences range from paddling the Presumpscot River at dusk through downtown Westbrook to a guided tour of Main Street in Biddeford hearing residents’ stories from across centuries to an immersion in Rockland’s boatbuilding legacy that spans crafting a wooden boat all the way to sailing around the bay.

“This initiative enables historic downtowns to use tourism as a catalyst to improve people’s lives, protect their natural environments, and celebrate their culture,” says Anne Ball, Senior Program Director of MDF’s Maine Downtown Center. “These unique experiences will attract tourists and locals alike and help keep most of the proceeds in the community. People will be more likely to eat at restaurants, attend events, support the arts, and shop in stores while in town.”

The initiative is the brainchild of Planeterra Foundation, an international consultant who worked with Biddeford, Gardiner, Rockland, Saco, and Westbrook to design experiences that promote the unique culture and history of each community. The project is part of the Maine Office of Tourism Marketing and Development Recovery Grant which was funded through the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Travel, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation State Grant.

Traveling from South to North across the state folks can experience any or all of the following:

“When you take part in Voices of Gardiner, you’re doing more than just exploring—you’re contributing to a more inclusive and connected community,” says Manon Whittlesey, program manager at Spindleworks Gardiner and co-lead for Gardiner’s tourism experience. “This experience uplifts the voices and talents of artists with developmental disabilities by positioning them as cultural creators and storytellers. At the same time, it strengthens Gardiner’s local economy by drawing attention to the unique businesses and individuals who shape the downtown. Proceeds help fund programming at Spindleworks Gardiner, ensuring that access to creativity, artistic expression, and meaningful community connections continues to grow for everyone involved.”

All five community tourism experiences are open to the public. More information on the tours can be found at Main Street Maine, (click on Community Experiences) the official tourism and marketing hub for Maine’s eleven nationally accredited Main Street communities.
